Heroin also known as diacetylmorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid drug is synthesized from morphine. In recent years, heroin availability has increased in U.S market. According to the law enforcement report, heroin is widely available in U.S market and its availability is increasing year by year.

As per the NDAT report, following factor evidenced the increasing availability of Heroin:

  • High wholesale purity of Heroin
  • Low prices in drugs market
  • Increased levels of abuse
  • Elevated numbers of overdoses and overdose deaths

In 2008, DEA Heroin Signature Program (HSP) data shows that Mexican heroin has 40 percent of purity. The wholesale purity of South American heroin is stabilized at 57 percent in 2008. According to NDAT (National Drug Threat Assessment) report, from 2004 to 2008 heroin production was increases to 342 percent and its purity also increases from 8.6 metric tons to 38 metric tons because of loose smuggling.

High availability of heroin increases the heroin abuse and overdose deaths. According to law enforcement report, Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, New England, New York, New Jersey, Southeast, and West Central OCDETF Regions are mostly affected by heroin abuse cases. Teens and adult are mostly affected by this heroin availability.

According to investigative report and heroin signature analysis, there are following reason for high heroin availability:

  • Smugglers are trafficking and distributing high quantities of South American heroin
  • White heroin is being produced in Mexico by using Colombian processing techniques
  • Smuggling of both South American and Mexican heroin

All above facts clearly indicate that there is a high availability of heroin in U.S market. Government should impose some new law enforcement law against theses non-legal activity.
