Mercedes Benz has announced that it is recalling its almost 137,000 of its M Class sport utility vehicles in the United States because of the problem, that tapping the brake may not disengage the cruise control. Mercedes Benz M Class is a luxury mid sized sports Utility Vehicle first offered in 1997 as a 1998 model and this M class became a huge success in United states and Mexico in terms of sales.

The company says that the recall covers 2000–02 M-Class and the 2000–04 M-Class AMG, a high-performance model, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The company reported to the N.H.T.S.A and the reason for recalling is that it had found a problem with the brake lamp switch, applying the brakes doesn’t send the electronic signal needed to disengage the cruise control.

Mercedes says it has began looking into the problem in September after some customer complaints and in December the safety agency began its own investigation after receiving reports from consumers that there was a problem with the cruise control. Mercedes described the recall as voluntary but according to the Federal rule the company if it is aware of a safety problem, it has to announce a recall with in five business days. Mercedes has said that it has identified the problem when it was cooperating with N.H.T.S.A. investigation.

Mercedes also suggests other ways to disengage the system, one way is to use the cruise-control stalk. The system is also designed to disengage below 25 m.p.h. Finally, harder braking also will turn off the system. Company also said that if the driver pumped the brakes, the brake booster vacuum can be consumed and also said that, in those cases, excessive pedal force may become necessary to achieve the rate of deceleration needed to disengage the cruise.
