The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime warned that developing countries could confront a health disaster if wealthy countries are unsuccessful to control drugs.

The UNODC Chief recognized the intensifying use of heroin in East Africa, cocaine in West Africa, and fake drugs in the Middle East and South East Asia as warning indications.

UNODC Chief Costas said that drug addiction can be treated correctly. But, there is an inequality within and between states which influence poor people and lack access to treatment.

The UNODC was working with the World Health Organization to attain universal approach to drug treatment and with UNAIDS to avoid the spread of HIV in injecting addicts.

Costas also said that it was also up to wealthy countries to emancipate the capacity of drugs to do good and Member states must conquer cultural and socio-economic factors which refuses a Nigerian suffering from AIDS or a Mexican cancer patient the morphine provided to Italian or American equivalents.
