Illicit drug use accounts for approximately 17,000 deaths annually the United States. Illicit drug use in young is associated with substance abuse and dependence with other health and social consequences, such as transmission of HIV, viral hepatitis, and other sexually transmitted diseases. Drug abuse has been identified as one of the major serious problems.

An adolescent’s decision to use drugs or not is the result of, social acceptability, parental influence, promotion, substance availability, and drug policies. Many dangerous results are linked with adolescent substance use. It involves motor vehicle crashes injury due to impaired driving, homelessness, and interpersonal violence, sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancy and many other squeal, including death. Apart from these, it has huge impact on academic performance, builds violent nature and increases depression. Adolescent drug use also increases the risk for depression and suicidal behavior.

More efforts are needed to strengthen the strategies that effectively prevent substance abuse, which has very harmful consequences on the young.
