The 2005 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey provided some good news regarding the teen drug abuse. MTF survey is one of three major surveys sponsored by HHS providing data on substance use among youth and teenagers. Analysis of the survey revealed that, there was a 19 percent reduction in the use of illicit drugs by 8th, 10th, and 12th grade teens.

It also showed a continuing general decline in drugs and prescription medications abuse. These include opioids, painkillers and many other prescribed medications. In past year, 9.5 percent of 12th graders reported to using of Vicodin, and 5.5 percent of OxyContin. Long-term trends show a continuous increase in the drug abuse from the year 2002. But in the year 2005, there was a lot of declination in abuse of these drugs.

The following are the changes observed in 2005:

• Lifetime use of methamphetamine fell 1.2 percent among 10th graders and fell 1.7 percent among 12th-graders.
• Use of steroids declined 1.1 percent among 12th-graders.

All statistical data by the Monitoring the Future survey gives a clear vision of reduced drug addiction among the teens.
