Dalai Lama with his humility made a donation of 100,000 Swiss francs to speed up the relief works in earthquake-destroyed Haiti. The donation was initiated through the International Red Cross Committee in Geneva.

In a letter sent to Tibetan leader, Bekele Geleta, the Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has represented “heartfelt gratitude for the generous contribution”.

A disastrous 7.0-magnitude earthquake trembled the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation, collapsing thousands of buildings, as well as the U.N. peacekeeping headquarters and government buildings. It was a day when even the Haitian President was left homeless for short time after the quake depressed the country’s landmark presidential palace.

Dalai Lama delivered a condolence letter to President Rene Garcia conveying “deep sympathy and heartfelt condolences” to the families of the earthquake victims. In this letter, the 74-year old Dalai Lama expressed he was “deeply saddened by the loss of so many lives and property” due to the earthquake which reportedly killed nearly 200,000 Haitians and left about 1 million homeless.
